I looked into his eyes What did I see? Nothing but pain Heartache and misery He's experienced more Than I can bear to imagine Still a Prisoner of War No peace withinFor 15 years My Grandfather was a POW The memories he shared I thought were untrue Experiments & beatings All those months of torture His only solace Was to die from hungerThey took his left rib And replaced it with the right They wanted to see If he'd survive through the night I looked into his eyes But they closed shut Flashbacks of the torture Could no longer be stopped Bull frogs, snakes, ants & roaches Were his only friend Night after night He prayed for his life to end Stories of the war He’s come to tell My Grandfather's past Was his bloody hell He bore the marks Upon his body As he lifted his shirt I could feel the agony Whipped, burned & tortured Then left in a ditch for many years Only to be washed & bathed By his flowing tears I looked into his eyes Like never before Shaking my head in disbelief. . . Crying! ‘Cuz I didn't want to hear anymore. I wished the memories would stop So he could forget about his holocaust But the horror continued About the day his soul was lost. His spirit as frail as his body He gave up on God & a miracle One night he prayed for the last time He struck a deal with the Devil His immoral pact tore into his heart Just like a jagged knife But he’d do anything to go home To his family & wife A walking corpse & dead inside My Grandfather’s soul was sacrificed Please, God! Forgive him! . . . And just look into his eyes!
In Loving Memory of My Grandfather (one of the greatest men who lived)
